On Thursday November 2, 2017, Front of the Class, the Rome Community Foundation and the Air Force Research Lab presented 18 LEGO Boost Robotics kits to District Superintendent Peter Blake and the Rome City School District at the district offices on Bell Road. The kits were presented to the district by Jeff DeMatteis from the Air Force Research Lab and Bill McCormick, the President of Front of the Class.

The LEGO Boost robotics kits are designed for kids from 7 to 12 years of age and allow kids to build five different robots. The kits are designed so that kids can write code through smart phones or tablets to program the various robots to perform actions.

The effort was coordinated through Front of the Class and was funded by grants from the Rome Community Foundation, the Griffiss Institute and Front of the Class’ Matching Fund. According to Bill McCormick, the President of Front of the Class, “Last spring, we received a couple of requests from Bellamy Elementary School to see if we could help fund an after-school STEM club and provide LEGO’s or robotics kits. The recently released LEGO Boost Kits were a perfect fit.”

“After a conversation with Peter Blake about providing them to the other elementary schools in the district, we decided to turn it into a program to purchase kits for a number of area school districts. The cost was beyond what Front of the Class could fund so we reached out to the Rome Community Foundation and the Griffiss Institute for help. We are extremely grateful for their support.”

The Rome Community Foundation’s grant helped pay for the Rome CSD kits, and the Air Force Research Lab’s grant helped pay for kits for the Rome CSD and the Camden CSD. Front of the Class is a Rome based educational charity that has a number of programs that help students, teachers and schools.

In the last year, Front of the Class delivered over 1000 backpacks of school supplies to area school districts though it’s Meet the Need Backpack Program. In addition to backpacks, the charity also helped fund classroom supplies for Front of the Class teachers, Leap Pad Tablets, the Rome Free Academy’s Speech and Debate Club’s trip to the New York State Finals.

If you would like to help support Front of the Class’ educational programs, the charity accepts donations though its website: www.frontoftheclass.us.
