Supplemental Educational Services

Description

Supplemental Services (SES) are provided at Strough Middle School Monday through Thursday from 2 to 3:45 p.m. through multiple providers. Transportation home is provided by the Rome City School District. The program will run through June 2010, at which time a summer school program will be available.

Student Selection

Students from identified schools qualify on the basis of income eligibility. Students whose STAR reading assessment indicates below grade level reading performance are strongly encouraged to participate. Students who fail to meet district standards on adopted common benchmark assessments in core subject areas will be required to attend tutorials focusing on the specific skill where they lack competency.

Instructional Design

Students are divided into small groups. Each group rotates through three 30-minute blacks. Skills and contact will correspond to the district's adopted curriculum maps. The three study blocks are: ELA practice on designated skills and comprehension strategies; Math practice on performance indicators where students lack competency; and homework help. Skills tutor software will be incorporated where appropriate.

Data Analysis

District common benchmark assessment data is obtained for each student. Students will be reassessed on the benchmark performance indicators to determine and chart competency and growth.

Tutors

All tutors are certified teachers. They were interviewed and selected by the SES providers. Provider's bill is based on actual services. This billing rate is applied per student based on attendance. Madison-Oneida BOCES has provided one week of training in reading comprehension strategies and effective instructional methods to assist student in acquiring the skills necessary to achieve competency of the targeted learning standards and performance indicators.

Coordinator
