Note: The Business Department offers 18 FREE college credits from MVCC !!!  You may choose from Marketing, Integrated Computer Apps, Personal Finance, Accounting, Business Math, & Introduction to Business.  (Some classes are only not offered every single year, so plan accordingly!) There is a 20 absence limit for MVCC credit.


FULL-YEAR CLASSES

ACCOUNTING **(MVCC)

Accounting is designed to cover each phase of the complete accounting cycle.  If you are planning on going to college for anything business related, TAKE THIS CLASS!  Topics include postings, ledgers, journals, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Students will have the opportunity to complete both manual and computerized problems. Students who have successfully passed the required Math Regents Exams may use this to fulfill their last unit of math.

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS**(MVCC)

This class is a great introductory college-level business course. Topics include creating, financing, marketing, and managing a business.  Hiring, firing, and business analysis is also included. This class is a fantastic overview of the business world.

BUSINESS MATH**(MVCC)

Do you want to learn how math can be used in the “real world”?  Well, this is the course for you!  You will use everything you learn in this course in your daily life!  Problem solving, simple and compound interest, present value, installment purchases and mortgage financing will be discussed. You will learn each component of payroll including how each tax deduction comes out of your paycheck. We will discuss retail business math including cash and trade discounts and merchandise markup. This course is worth taking for sure!

  • May be used to fulfill your last required unit of math.

MARKETING**(MVCC)

Each phase of the marketing cycle such as financing, risk management, selling, promotion, pricing, purchasing information management, and idea planning and distribution will be developed. Additional topics that will be covered are public speaking, resumes, interviews, subliminal advertising, commercials, infomercials, selling techniques, gimmicks, and ad layouts.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER APPLICATIONS**(MVCC)

Do you get frustrated when trying to complete a project in Word, Powerpoint, Excel, or Access?  Do you know how these software programs work with each other? This is a great class to prepare for college or the workforce! (MS Office & Google platforms.)

  • 1 RFA Credit
  • MVCC Credit: IS 101  (3 College Credits)
  • College textbook provided free of charge.


PERSONAL FINANCE **(MVCC)

Do you love money? In this class, you will learn about the stock market, bonds, international investments, checking & savings, and lots more!!!  

  • 1 RFA Credit
  • All students would benefit from this class!
  • MVCC Credit: BM108 (3 College Credits)
  • College textbook provided free of charge.
  • Homework is expected.



BUSINESS OWNERSHIP (Runs The Knight Spot School Store)

This course allows a student to participate in the management and daily operation of RFA’s school store.  Selected entrepreneurial skills used in management, merchandising, and marketing functions necessary to operate a small business will be covered in this course.  Students will complete a full “Business Plan”. Learn how to be your own boss!

  • 1 RFA Credit
  • Students MUST have time to commit to work in The Knight Spot 5th, 6th, or 7th period. (Lunch or Study Hall)  *Responsible for money.*



REAL LIFE/CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (Junior Achievement Program)

Are you tired of being asked “What do you want to do after high school?” because you have absolutely no idea?  Would you like to match your personality with a great career option? This class should really be called “REAL LIFE 101”!!   We will be tackling everything from training programs, college options, resumes, cover letters, interview skills, taxes, and what it takes to be successful in the workplace.  Best of all, we will show you how to save and manage your money after you get that first big paycheck! This is a great introduction to the working world and this class will help you decide which RFA classes you should take to help you achieve your own goals! There is no prerequisite for this class and it may be scheduled anytime during grades 9-12. (However, it is geared towards 9th & 10th grade students.)

  • Geared towards 9th & 10th grade students, although it is open to everyone!
  • Many guest speakers, field trips, & mentoring from the business community.




HALF-YEAR CLASSES

PERSONAL KEYBOARDING

A keyboarding course is a MUST for all students! In this course, students learn the touch method of keyboarding and introductory concepts in word processing, database management, spreadsheets skills, and presentation techniques using Microsoft Office.

  • ½ RFA Credit
  • No homework


BUSINESS LAW

This course is now offered as a half-year elective and is an encouraged elective for all students! It emphasizes “real life” legal examples that may be experienced in life. Topics such as the history of the legal systems, contracts, minors and employment, unions, criminal law, & lawsuits are covered.

  • ½ RFA Credit
  • Ideal for any grade, 9-12.
  • Very little homework.



PERSONAL LAW

This course is now offered as a half-year elective and is an encouraged elective for all students! It emphasizes “real life” legal examples that may be experienced in life. Legal areas of marriage, divorce, renting an apartment, buying a home, insurance, and wills are covered.

  • ½ RFA credit
  • Ideal for any grade, 9-12.
  • Very little homework.



FINANCIAL DECISION MAKING

This course is designed to explore and apply every day financial decisions. Topics covered include investments, car insurance, life insurance, renters and homeowner’s insurance, checking and savings accounts, taxes, loans, and credit. College selection and loans are also discussed.  

  • ½ RFA Credit
  • A suggested “must-take” for all students 9-12.
  • Very little homework
