Connected Community SchoolsRandi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) representing over 1.7 million members nationwide, will be visiting the Rome City School District on Thursday October 31, 2019. The Rome School District Teachers Union reached out to the AFT for financial support to bring the Community Schools concept to Rome. Over the past three years, AFT has invested $300,000 into the Rome Community Schools model. Ms. Weingarten promotes what she calls “solution-driven unionism”—an approach to collective bargaining and collective action that unites the interests of union members and those they serve in the pursuit of solutions that benefit students, schools and communities.

Through the Community Schools model, the Rome City School District has been able to streamline, coordinate and deliver services to students and families in Rome so that the students can be successful in school despite any personal obstacles. Over the past year these services and referrals to community based agencies have included such needs as housing, food insecurity, medical and dental referrals, and mental health to name a few. In 2017, the Rome Teachers Union created the Rome Alliance for Education as a not-for-profit under the leadership of Melissa Roys. Ms. Roys has been able to secure 52 businesses and community based agencies to form a partnership to meet the needs of our students and families.

“The Rome Teachers Union, Rome City School District and Rome Alliance for Education are thrilled to welcome Randi Weingarten to our community. Randi and her team have been a tremendous support to our Community Schools Initiative well beyond their financial investment. The success of our Community Schools would not be as far along as it is today, reaching some many families and supporting some many students without the AFT. As of today, several hundred families have been directly supported and our model continues to grow to meet the demand of our community. We are humbled to have Randi come see our progress and talk to our teachers, students and families,” said Melissa Roys, Executive Director of Rome Alliance for Education.

On Thursday October 31, 2019 will be a Press Conference to make an announcement of future AFT support to our community. The Press Conference will be at 2:30 at Rome Free Academy.
