Dear Rome Free Academy Parents and Guardians,
I'm writing to you with an update on an incident that occurred at our school this morning and to reassure you about our unwavering commitment to student safety.
At approximately 9:00 a.m., we received reports of an unusual odor in a student bathroom. Following our established safety procedures, we immediately evacuated the building and contacted the Rome Fire Department. Their team responded quickly, conducted a thorough assessment of the building, and confirmed it was safe for everyone to return.
Although the building was cleared, we are aware that some students and staff experienced a reaction to the odor. Our school nurses and nurse practitioner were immediately on hand to provide care and support. As a further precaution, our nurse practitioner consulted with HAZMAT and Poison Control experts. Their guidance, along with the fire department's assessment, has assured us that our school is safe. We are also staying in close communication with Rome Health to ensure we have every resource available to support our students and staff.
Your children’s well-being is our top priority, and we believe in being proactive and transparent. As an additional measure of caution, we had arranged for the Rome Fire Department to return this afternoon to conduct a full sweep of the building, and they again cleared the building.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation and collaborate with all necessary authorities to ensure our school remains a healthy and secure place for our students and staff. We will be sure to keep you informed of any further developments.
Sincerely,
Andrew Barton
