Students at John Joy Elementary rocked their “mismatched socks” on Thursday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and honor their peers with Down syndrome. Penelope Kroviak, Bowen Lanahan, Armani Pearson, and Grayson Wilks, all children with Down syndrome, led a parade through the halls of John Joy as fellow students, faculty, and staff cheered them on.
Why mismatched socks? They symbolize the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes that look similar to mismatched socks! This fun tradition also helps spark important conversations about acceptance and celebrating what makes each of us unique.
We’re proud to foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for everyone in the Rome City School District.
