Dear Rome City School District Families and Employees,

On behalf of the Rome City School District, we sincerely thank everyone who participated in yesterday’s annual budget vote and Board of Education election. The level of community participation in these important decisions reflects the deep care, commitment, and pride our residents have for our students, staff, and schools.

The proposed 2026–2027 school budget was not approved by voters, falling short by 24 votes, with 49% in favor and 51% opposed. The separate transportation proposition for bus expenditures was approved, with 57% in favor and 43% opposed.

We would also like to congratulate those elected to serve on the Board of Education. Incumbents Jeff DeMatteis and Suzanne Carvelli were re-elected to continue their service to the Rome City School District community. Jeff DeMatteis was elected to a five-year term with 718 votes, while Suzanne Carvelli received 624 votes to earn election to a three-year term. Rocky Capponi also received 594 votes to earn election to a three-year term. We appreciate their willingness to serve and continued commitment to the important work taking place across our district.

While the outcome of the budget vote is disappointing, it also provides an opportunity for reflection, continued dialogue, and thoughtful consideration as we move forward together. The Board of Education now has the following possible paths regarding the district’s 2026–2027 budget: adopting a contingency budget or moving forward with a second public vote in June. If a second vote is scheduled, the Board could present either the same budget proposal or a revised proposal for voter consideration.

In the coming days, the Board of Education will carefully review these options and determine next steps. Throughout this process, we remain committed to transparency, open communication, and keeping our community informed.

The Rome City School District remains deeply committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities and meaningful support for every student we serve. We are grateful for the continued partnership, engagement, and collaboration of our families, employees, and community members as we continue this work together.

Thank you for your continued support of the Rome City School District.

Sincerely,

Nerlande Anselme
Superintendent of Schools
