It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Donald Mortis, beloved head custodian of John Joy Elementary.

Dewey was a treasured member of the Rome City School District family. His kindness, dedication, contagious smile, and unwavering commitment to our schools touched the lives of countless students, staff, and community members. He took immense pride in caring for our buildings and creating welcoming, safe spaces for all who entered them.

As we grieve his unexpected passing, we also honor the lasting impact he made on our district and the meaningful relationships he built over the years. Dewey's presence could be felt throughout our schools, and his legacy of service, compassion, and pride in his work will continue to inspire us. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever remain an important part of the Rome City School District community.

Dewey’s family will hold a graveside service on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Rome, New York. There will be no calling hours.

The service is open to friends, colleagues, and community members who wish to pay their respects. Limited seating will be available; however, attendees should anticipate standing for the service.
