Why Is School Starting Before Labor Day This Year?

We understand that some families may have questions about why the 2026–2027 school year is beginning before Labor Day. We appreciate the opportunity to provide some background about how the school calendar is developed.

The Rome City School District is one of the component districts of Madison-Oneida BOCES. Each year, the component districts work collaboratively through Madison-Oneida BOCES to develop school calendars that meet New York State requirements while supporting the needs of students, families, staff, and our regional programs and services.

For the 2026–2027 school year, all Madison-Oneida BOCES component districts will begin the school year before Labor Day. While there are many years when school begins after Labor Day, there are also years when an earlier start date is necessary to meet state requirements and create a balanced academic calendar that supports learning throughout the year.

When developing the calendar, districts carefully consider several important factors, including:

• New York State requirements for instructional days and hours.

• Required holidays and school recess periods.

• Professional development opportunities for staff.

• State assessment and Regents examination schedules.

• Coordination of shared BOCES programs, transportation, and regional services.

After the regional calendar development process is complete, each local Board of Education reviews and formally adopts its district’s school calendar.

We recognize that families have different perspectives and preferences when it comes to the school calendar, and we appreciate that feedback. Our goal is to provide a calendar that meets state requirements, supports student learning, and allows our schools to operate effectively while maintaining consistency with our regional partners.
