Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our own, Levi J. DeMatteis.
Levi left an indelible impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was one of the kindest, gentlest, and most genuine souls you could ever encounter. A junior at Rome Free Academy, a phenomenal athlete, a loyal friend, and a beloved member of our school community, he brought so much to the lives of those around him.
Above all, Levi was a child of God. His faith was at the center of his life, and he carried it with a strength and conviction that touched those around him. His kindness, gentleness, humility, and love for others reflected the beautiful young man so many were blessed to know.
Levi’s impact cannot be measured by the number of games he played, the friendships he made, or the years he spent with us. His greatest impact could be found in the lives he touched, the people who loved him, and the memories he created. Memories that will remain with our school community forever.
Our entire Rome City School District stands with the DeMatteis family during this unimaginable time. We hold his parents, siblings, and loved ones especially close in our hearts and prayers. We also lift up Levi’s friends, teammates, classmates, teachers, coaches, and all who loved him as we come together to grieve this tremendous loss.
We grieve together. We support one another. And we will remember Levi not simply for the difficult days that came at the end of his life, but for the beautiful life he lived, the love he gave, the faith he carried, and the light he brought into the lives of so many.
Rest peacefully, Levi. You will forever be a part of the Rome family, and you will never be forgotten.
