Healthy students are better prepared to learn.
That belief continues to guide the Rome City School District's work to strengthen health services and student wellness as part of Pillar 2 of the District's Strategic Plan: Nurturing Safe and Inclusive Communities for Learning.
During the 2025-2026 school year, Rome CSD strengthened health services by transitioning from a contracted nurse practitioner provider to a district-employed Nurse Practitioner. This change replaced the previous service model and allows for stronger collaboration among school nurses, administrators, families, and community healthcare partners.
The district also launched a monthly Health and Wellness Newsletter to keep families informed, partnered with Healthy Smiles NY to provide free school-based dental care for more than 700 students, and expanded health education through strengthened partnerships with the Oneida County Health Department and other local organizations.
Behind these efforts is a dedicated and experienced team of school nurses and health office staff who care for students every day, providing support, comfort, and professionalism to create a safe and nurturing school environment.
Together, these efforts help remove barriers to learning by ensuring students have access to the care and support they need to be healthy, safe, and ready to succeed.
"Our commitment to student success begins with supporting the health and well-being of every child,” said Rome CSD Nurse Practitioner Carolyn Getchell. “I am incredibly proud of our Health Services team for working together to expand access to care, build meaningful community partnerships, and provide exceptional support to our students, families, and staff. Their dedication helps create healthier learners and stronger schools every day.”
